2023 Redistricting

• Elementary students will receive information from their future principal around March 7th, including welcoming opportunities for families who will be changing schools. Please stay tuned and check your email, school social media, district website, district newsletter through the next few months for more information.

• Middle school students will receive information before the end of the semester about Bulldog Rush, which takes place in August. While this was previously only for 6th graders and students new to the district, this year will include students of all grade levels. Parent information nights will also be scheduled.

• If your child is an exceptional learner, you will receive more information from our Department of Exceptional Education.

• Annual registration will take place in late July. You will complete this process as normal, it will simply be for your new school.

Through intentional collaboration, our elementary and middle schools have continued to align their curriculum and student experiences. Our schools are more connected than ever before in order to provide equitable learning experiences.

• At our elementary buildings, the following practices or content have been aligned over the last two years: curriculum for reading and math; the number of instructional minutes per subject; extracurricular offerings; grading practices for math and ELA; methods and tools for evaluating teachers; assistant principals in every building; administrative, counselor, and grade-level team meetings; instructional coaches and learning specialists working across buildings; and on-going professional development throughout the district. 

• At our middle schools, we continue to develop programs that support not only the academic growth of students and prepare them to attend the same high school, but to also address the unique needs of middle school students. Both schools use Bulldog Blueprint, a framework of character traits such as kindness and responsibility; Challenge Ed, a hands-on cooperative learning experience to develop positive peer relationships; and have aligned extra and co curricular opportunities.

No. The purpose of redistricting was to balance enrollment and provide equity. Allowing students to remain at their school does not achieve these goals. 

• Jerry Ross and Winfield will become K-5 buildings. It is not possible to have rising 5th graders stay at Jerry Ross and still have room for grades K-4. It would be unfair for students at other elementary schools to remain but not Jerry Ross students.

• While some parents may offer to transport their children themselves, not all families can do this. It is not equitable to allow some students to stay at their previous school because they have additional transportation available.

While we have an existing process for some students to attend a school that does not match their assigned school, it is very rare that they are given and are only for extenuating circumstances such as homelessness or foster placements. If you feel your circumstances are unique and would like to ask about applying for a waiver, please email cpcsc@cps.k12.in.us. It may take a few weeks before a determination can be made.

Current Voluntary Transfer Requests that were in place before new boundaries were announced will be honored. If you have a question about your VTR, please email cpcsc@cps.k12.in.us. 

We are thrilled that because of the redistricting and construction projects, almost every school will have space for exceptional learners to be educated at their home school (the school matching their residency). This is a big step forward for our exceptional learners and their families. If your child is changing schools, you will receive more information from our Department of Exceptional Education shortly after the new boundaries are completed.

In some rare instances, students who receive specialized services not available through their home school because of staffing considerations will attend another school and transportation will be provided. These families will receive information directly from the Department of Exceptional Education.

• Teachers will stay with their current schools. There may be some teachers who request to change buildings, which is done through an annual process via our HR department.

• Depending on class sizes/changes, it is possible that some teachers would be transferred to another location. However, most of our staff will remain the same. These conversations will take place with teachers and administrators this spring.

Families new to the district should enroll at their current home school if you're starting before the end of the current school year. Incoming kindergarteners for the 23-24 school year will enroll at the school they will attend next year. If you have questions, please call our administration building at 219-663-3371.

Now that boundary changes are complete, we can begin planning transportation for next year. We hope that with transportation modifications, we will not need to adjust start times. More information will be provided before the current school year is over.

Transportation routes and information are completed every summer after the registration process. Parents will receive their child’s bus information a couple of days before school starts.
