"I've heard so many great things about the JR Outdoor Learning Lab, but what exactly is it, and how it is going to enhance the learning at Jerry Ross?"
The outdoor learning lab at Jerry Ross Elementary School in Winfield is designed to enhance student lessons in every area from science to math to music and art. The project is a functional scientific laboratory where students can enjoy hands on learning. Students can study outside and watch the growth of birds and animals in their natural habitat. Students learn the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as the necessity for conservation and preservation. Area schools, civic organizations and community groups are invited to use the laboratory.Plans for the outdoor lab include a pond, a wetland marsh area and a prairie featuring native meadow plants and other perennial plants. The pond will support aquatic plants and fish and re-circulate water through the wetland marsh. It will be four to five feet deep, permitting animals to hibernate during the winter months in the pond. The prairie meadow will provide habitat for animals and feature native wildflowers and plants. The outdoor learning laboratory will also feature a butterfly garden.
