IREAD Information - Grade 2

Dear Second Grade Families,

Our elementary team wants to make sure you have important information about changes to IREAD for your student in the upcoming year.

IREAD-3 is a state-level reading assessment that measures important reading skills. Each year, the test is given to third graders in Indiana. Students need to pass IREAD-3 in third grade in order to move on to fourth grade.

Because of new legislation, The Indiana Department of Education now requires second grade students to take IREAD-3. Students who earn a passing score as second graders will not be required to test again in third grade. There are several benefits to students, families, and schools that come with taking IREAD-3 earlier.

  • Third grade is a year with two state assessments (ILEARN and IREAD-3). Second graders who demonstrate proficiency on IREAD-3 will not have to take the IREAD-3 again as a third grader.
  • Proactively testing in second grade can help parents and teachers work together to ensure students receive the reading support they need throughout their third grade year.
  • An Individual Student Report that explains your student’s results will be shared after testing so you better understand your child’s reading progress. You will receive results in one of three categories: Pass, On Track, or At Risk.

IREAD-3 will be given between March 3-14. As we approach that window, your child’s school or teacher will share more specific dates and times. Any student with testing accommodations in their IEP, 504, or ILP will receive the accommodations for the assessment.

You can read more about the IREAD-3 Assessment at this link. There are also some useful FAQs and practice questions provided.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this new opportunity for our second graders - we look forward to partnering with you to help your child grow as a reader. If you have any questions, please reach out to me, your child’s principal, or their teacher.
