ELL Students Celebrate Growth

Nearly 300 CPCSC students have a language other than English as their first. English Language Learners represent a growing student population in Crown Point, with nearly 100 students added to the program since 2018. More than 20 languages are represented among these students!

Families of multilingual students from across the district and ELL staff recently gathered at Lake Street Elementary School to celebrate the end of the 2022-2023 school year and the growth students have made. At the event, families received the 2022-2023 WIDA scores, which helps parents and students understand each language learner’s growth throughout the year. Families also learned about summer learning opportunities and met with the ELL team to discuss student progress. Students enjoyed ice cream and participated in fun activities outside. Every student received a book to support their literacy skill development over the summer.

ELL programs facilitate language development and promote academic achievement. Through specialized instruction, these programs enhance students' English language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. As students become more proficient in English, they gain better access to the curriculum and are more likely to succeed academically.

ELL programs also play a crucial role in boosting students' self-confidence and self-esteem. By providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment, these programs help ELL students feel valued and respected. As their language skills improve, so does their sense of belonging, leading to increased motivation and engagement in their studies.
