CPHS Latin Club Attends State Latin Day

THE CPHS Latin Club recently closed out a fun-filled week of activities that ended with the 44th annual Indiana Junior Classical League Fall Latin Day on November 20 at Butler University in Indianapolis.

Among the festivities was a theme for each school day leading up to Latin Day. Each theme included activities for students. On Medusa Monday, students created clay sculptures. For Trojan Tuesday, donations were collected for St. Jude. Warrior Wednesday included a scavenger hunt while Theseus Thursday challenged students to a minotaur escape room. Finally, students made blankets for the animal shelter on Fleece Friday.

On Saturday's Fall Latin Day participants attended three different breakout sessions with academic games, workshops about JCL and its activities, and lectures by professors of classical studies.

First, students were able to play games from the ancient world, including Roman Chess and Checkers, Terni Lapilli, and Scopa. Then, students participated in sessions geared toward preparing them for the IJCL’s annual state convention in the areas of art competitions, modern myth, oratories, and Certamen. Students also learned about archaeology and numismatics through objects from Butler’s Ancient Mediterranean Cultures and Archaeology Lab. Finally, Butler University professors gave presentations on Roman theater, ancient women, and ancient religions.

The CPHS Latin Club will also attend a number of upcoming events throughout the state in the second semester. The national competition will be held in the summer of 2022.
