Crown Point High School’s student-led newscast, CPTV News QuickCUT, was awarded its third consecutive national National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) award during the 9th annual National Student Production Awards ceremony. This award cements CPTV’s place as a high quality program in student journalism.
The ceremony celebrated the best in high school journalism and filmmaking nationwide. Hosted by NBC Sports commentator Noah Eagle, the event featured notable presenters, including culinary host Buddy Valastro, CNN journalist Nada Bashir, and MLB Network’s Siera Santos.
Faculty adviser Chris Gloff reflected on the program’s evolution and credited the students’ creativity and determination. “During the pandemic, our discussions shifted to finding new ways to communicate news, which led to the creation of QuickCUT. We had no idea how this new format would fare outside our school walls. Winning the national newscast award three years in a row validates our students’ hard work and innovation. NATAS represents the gold standard in broadcasting, and it’s incredible to be recognized at this level.”
CPTV News QuickCUT’s senior news producer and anchor MiRey Fernandez shared the impact of the program: “This experience has brought us national recognition as broadcast journalists. When we attend competitions or visit our local NATAS chapter in Chicago, people recognize our work. This program has given me a head start in the industry, and I am grateful for everything I’ve learned here.”
This year’s award-winning newscast was the product of a dedicated team, including Ryan Welsh, Kailey Palomo, MiRey Fernandez, Ari Pantoja, Trent Josleyn, RJ Swiedals, David Pineda, Sarah Helbasko, and Aiden Hielema, as well as graduates now attending journalism schools across the country.
NATAS President and CEO Adam Sharp praised the student winners, saying, “One day, we will see our world reflected through the eyes and lenses of these motivated student journalists and storytellers. It’s an honor to celebrate the work they’re already doing.”
The National Student Production Awards spotlight the exceptional work of high school journalists, selecting national winners from a pool of regional champions. The foundation’s chair, Doug Mummert, emphasized the bright future of media: “This year’s submissions offered a glimpse into today’s communities and lives, and tomorrow’s media is in great hands with these talented young people.”
