This is a quick checklist of things to remember about Kindergarten for the beginning of the school year. I will give you more detailed information at Back To School Night!Parent/Teacher Relationship
I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you as much as possible. Students will have take-home folders in which I will put any notes or reminders as well as all of your student’s work. This folder will be sent home Every Afternoon and returned Every Morning. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can send me a note, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call me at school (219-663-2287 ext. 19230).
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. I can’t emphasize this point enough!!! Most kindergarten learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child attends everyday except in cases of illness or emergency. If your child is going to be absent please call Winfield Elementary at 219-663-2287.
When your child arrives in the morning they are to come in and put their backpacks in their locker and turn in their folders. After school, students who ride the bus will have specific places inside of the school to wait for the bus. Those students who are picked up will be dismissed together. For the safety of your child and all the children at Winfield, we ask that you drop them off and pick them up outside the building. If for any reason you need to enter the school, we ask that you please enter through the doors by the office and pick up a visitor sticker. This helps alleviate any confusion between staff and visiting adults in the building.
Changes in Transportation
If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you must send a written note. Please do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If no written note is received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.
The children will be going out for recess daily excluding days that it is raining or the temperature is below zero. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day. For the most part, if your child is well enough to be at school, he/she is well enough to participate in outdoor recess, if dressed appropriately. However, on those occasions when you feel it is best for your child to stay indoors, please send a written note and I will make arrangements for your child to do so.
On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope with the following information written on it:
1. Your child’s first and last name.
2. The amount of money.
3. The purpose for the money (book money, lunch money, picture money, etc.).
4. My name.
Your child will be bringing home a form to order books about once a month. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send the correct amount of money or a check made out to the book company in an envelope. These orders are provided as a convenient way for parents to buy quality books for their child at a low price. As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books, I earn bonus points that are used to purchase books for classroom use. This is a win-win situation because you get quality literature at a low price and you are helping to provide quality literature for the classroom. Of course, you are never under any obligation to order.
Sharing is important because students are very proud of their belongings and it is a great way for them to improve their interpersonal skills. Each child will be Student of the Week one time during the Kindergarten school year. I will be sending home a poster and a letter home with your child on Friday if they are chosen as student of the week for the following week. Please read the letter carefully and complete the poster. Being Student of the Week is very exciting for the kindergartners! This is their time to Shine!
The children will be having a daily snack. I am asking that each child bring a healthy snack in their backpack every day. Please keep the snack simple and limited to items that will not spoil if left in a backpack for several hours. Please DO NOT send in candy, pop, sweets etc.
Your child will be eating lunch in the cafeteria. Your child has the option of bringing his/her lunch to school or buying one of the school lunch choices for the day. Please discuss the lunch choices with your child before he/she comes to school. Your child’s lunch time will be from 11:15-11:45 AM.
Once a week your child will be going to the library. Please remember to send your child with his/her library book on his/her designated library day only. This is when they will be checking out new books and they will not be able to get a new book unless they return their old book.
The Kindergartners will be going to PE twice a week with Mr. Hedl. Our PE days are every Wednesday from 10:45-11:15 and every Friday from 12:30-1:00. Please remember to have your child wear gym shoes and dress appropriately on this day.
In closing, I would just like to say that I am looking forward to a great year of working with your child! I would also like to suggest that you save this letter for future reference. Thank you in advance for your concern and support throughout the year!!!
