Welcome, ! Thanks for visiting my website!
My name is Melanie Pociask and I teach 5th graders at Lake Street Elementary in Crown Point, Indiana. This is my 16th year of teaching wonderful students at Lake Street! Throughout my teaching career, I have been fortunate enough to gain experience teaching kindergartners, first, second, and fourth grade students. I am excited to begin a new journey in 3rd grade! At Lake Street, I participate in many extra-curricular activities. I am a former PTO President, current PTO Board Advisor, an Indiana State Certified Mentor to new teachers, a member of our School Improvement Committee/AdvancEd Leadership Team, and co-coordinator of Lake Street's Got Talent. I am also involved with building kindergarten curriculum for CP 2.0, Crown Point Community School Corporation's blended learning initiative and facilitating a blended learning course for Kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers.
Before teaching, I attended elementary, middle, and high school in the School City of Hammond, graduating from Hammond High School in 2001. I was home-schooled for a short time during high school which provided me a different perspective on education. After high school, I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana in 2005. I earned my Master's of Education degree through Indiana Wesleyan in September 2012 and then completed the Principal Licensure Program at Indiana Wesleyan University in May of 2013. As you can see, I value learning and place a big emphasis on continuing my education. I believe that you are never too old to take classes or continue learning! I hope this sets a great example for my students as they become life-long learners.
My son, Jack, and I live in Crown Point. He was a Lake Street student as well, but now moved on to middle school. We love to play outside, swim, read, travel, and explore new things. Several years ago I became interested in health and fitness. I spend a lot of time each day at the gym and especially love weight training. In my free time, I enjoy learning about weather. I am a certified storm spotter and part of the Northwest Indiana Storm Spotters organization. If you are a child who is afraid of thunderstorms and bad weather--no worries, I know a LOT about weather and will make sure you are extra safe and comfortable when you are with me at school! Plus, I'll teach you how to do a special snow dance during the winter! :) Please take a few moments to look around my website. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me!
