Course Description
Spanish for Heritage Speakers is a course designed for native or heritage speakers of Spanish who have demonstrated some degree of oral proficiency. The purpose of this course is to enable Native/Heritage Spanish speakers to increase proficiency and bi-literacy in Spanish by providing opportunities to improve reading and listening comprehension, as well as writing and grammar skills. Special attention will be given to grammar and vocabulary of standard collegiate Spanish, as well as to the importance of biculturalism and bilingualism in the United States today. Course curriculum may be altered to accommodate the particular population of students enrolled in the course. Upon completion of one year, the course instructor will recommend placement of individual students into Spanish for Heritage Speakers II, Spanish II or Spanish III. Students may also be recommended to take a second year of this course to further reinforce their language skills.
