SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Attendance:

Attendance is so crucial to student learning. It is of utmost importance that students are in school each and everyday, all day. We understand the difficulties associated with medical appointments. If at all possible try to make appointments after school.

To report an absence parents must call before 9:30 am. We have a 24-hr. answering service so call as soon as you know your child will be absent. The number to call is 663-2525

School Newsletter:
Each week, newsletter is sent to parent via e-mail.  This newsletter takes many hours of preparation, but we feel this communication is an important link between school and home. Please take some time to read over the information provided.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The school was named after the founder of the City of Crown Point and Lake County Indiana (1834). Solon Robinson was an author, statesman, religious leader, and political figure known throughout the state, Midwest and the nation.

Our Elementary School is a K-5 elementary with approximately 470 students and 40 staff members. Solon has received Indiana's highest award of distinction as an Indiana Four Star School on five different occasions.
Solon Robinson has had a tradition of high academic performance, excellent instruction, positive-nurturing school environment, and an emphasis in the areas of science and the performing arts.

The school is located on a beautifully landscaped 15-acre campus. The school's interior provides a state of the art atmosphere for our students. Networked computer systems, Internet access in all classrooms, computer and science labs, closed circuit TV, and media retrieval systems provide some of the best technology available in the state.

PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION

Solon students benefit greatly from an active PTO. This organization is a vital part of the continuing education of our students. The PTO assists with social activities, volunteer coordination, financial support, incentive programs, and a multitude of other school related activities. If you would like to help out with PTO, please give the school a call and we will put you in touch with our PTO president, Ken Kelliher, and don't forget to sign up as a member during registration.

TRANSPORTATION

Buses:
During morning arrival, buses drop off students in the front circle drive and during afternoon departure buses load and depart from the back of the school. To be eligible for bus transportation student residence must be more than one mile from the school.

Cars:
Students who are arriving in the morning should be dropped off on Pettibone Street or at the parking lot entrances. (Please do not drop off students near the bus entrance on Pettibone Street)
Walkers:
Students who walk to school need to use the following guidelines: morning arrival at school should be no earlier than 8:30 am, always use sidewalks and be aware of cars at all times, obey and follow all directions of crossing guards, and always dress for appropriate weather conditions.

CHARACTER EDUCATION

Our Mega Skills program here supports character education at Solon Robinson. It is a foundation to the success we experience here at school. We promote the following life long skills in all that we do in our day to day activities:

CONFIDENCE, MOTIVATION, EFFORT, RESPONSIBILITY, PERSEVERANCE, INITIATIVE, CARING, TEAMWORK, COMMON SENSE, AND PROBLEM SOLVING

CAFETERIA

Our cafeteria staff offers a variety of hot lunches, hand-made salads, and a pizza choice once a week. Students receive a debit card that they use each and every day. Debit cards can be credited by simply sending in a check made out to Solon Robinson Elementary. Our cafeteria staff takes pride in providing delicious hot lunches for our students. Financial assistance is available for the lunch program, just call the school office for details.
